Road Closures & Travel Restrictions


Travel into and out of Lewes is seriously restricted for bonfire night. This is entirely for safety reasons.

Trains. No trains will stop at Lewes or the immediate stations either side, Cooksbridge, Glynde, Falmer, Southease etc from 5.00pm. Services will recommence with the first scheduled trains 6th November.

Buses. No buses will run through the town from 4.45pm they will stop at Kingstone roundabout and on the A26 malling Hill & Malling Street. No buses will run in the town. The buses will run a late service back to Brighton, picking up from the Tempoary Bus stopping area close to Cuilfail Tunnel.

Taxis prebooked taxis can pick up after 10.30 pm from the Cuilfail Tunnel area , they cannot pick up in the town or drive through the town before the road closures are lifted, usually around 2.00am.

Cars. ,Parking restrictions will apply on all roads leading into Lewes. Tow away operates along all the approach roads to Lewes within the closure area. .and can apply on the C7 A27 A26 & A275 outside the closure. Take care when parking. We do not want your evening ruined bu getting your car towed.

Bicycles. Cyling to Lewes particualy from Brighton is popular,. You are advised to lock your cycles near to Lewes Prison on the Brighton Road. You may NOT ride them in town during the road closures and pushing them can be dangerous due to large crowds and the processions. There is a safe cycle route to Lewes from Ringmer in the east, and from Brighton in the West.

Road blocks. The road blocks come into operation at 4.45pm and remain in place until around 2.00am although exit from the town is usually possible with care from around 12.30 to 1.00am.

The road blocks and road closures to traffic are to ensure maximum safety for all participants , visitors, residents, security personel and our blue light collegues.

Parking is very limited in Lewes but possible for those who arrive early. but be prepared to wait until the early hours to get out if parked in the centre of town.
